As much as I appreciated Chessyâs help, that help only went so far. She was unable to provide me with a reliable way to look up the owner of the license plate. She said there were a number of commercial services out there that might provide the information for a fee if I wanted to pay up. But even then, she couldnât guarantee that Iâd get the identity of the current owner and said I was more likely to pull up past ownership information if the plate was no longer in service. Well, I knew it was still in service.
I did manage to find a state records website that would have provided me with all of the current information on the plate except for the name of the person it belonged to. Or at least, I thought I had. They, too, wanted me to pay a fee. But I had a better idea. Maybe a slightly, possibly illegal idea, but it was worth a try.
Grabbing my pocketbook, I went downstairs and out to my car, and slipped into the driverâs seat. I took off and headed toward a street I knew had pretty wide lanes and decent shoulder space. You see, this is where having a car thatâs a little dented up really comes in handy! I pulled over, called for the police, and waited for them to arrive.
A few moments later, I heard a knock on my window, and I looked up into the most beautiful blue eyes Iâve ever seen. Those eyes sat in a strikingly handsome face, and for a second, I wondered if Iâd have the nerve to pull off my plan. He was simply mesmerizing! After attempting to gather my wits about me, I lowered the window.
âMaâam,â the officer said. âAre you all right?â
âI-I think so,â I stammered.
âDid you call the police to report an accident? A hit and run?â he asked in the most melodic southern drawl I think Iâve ever heard.
I couldnât quite place the accent, though. People not from the south tend to think that all southerners talk the same regardless of which state or region theyâre from. But that isnât the case. Anna Leeâs accent is very Deep-South southern. Lanie, born and bred in Raleigh, sounds very different. Move on up to Virginia, and you begin to hear a slight change as well. As for me, I got rid of my native accent many years ago. Took a lot of practice and many hours of watching Hollywood daytime soaps, but I did it! As for this police officer, his accent genuinely stumped me. I had no idea where he was from originally.
âUmm, yes, I called to report an accident,â I eventually responded.
âWould you like to get out of your car and tell me what happened?â
âIf itâs okay with you, Iâd prefer not to get out of my car. Iâm very shaken up. Very very shaken up. He came out of nowhere and sideswiped me. Just sideswiped me. He stopped his car several yards down the road, and then after a minute, he sped away.
